Strategic Thinkers With Great Results

What We Are Seeing In The New Digital Landscape

Over the past quarter we’ve spoken with more than 30 agencies to understand what they are seeing in a world that is less search‑driven and far more influence‑driven.

SOCIAL IS BEHAVING MORE LIKE SEARCH

Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit and even LinkedIn are now acting as discovery engines, not just engagement channels. The typical customer path is increasingly: discover in feed – validate elsewhere – leave and return later via direct traffic or branded search, rather than converting in the same session.

As a result, many teams are seeing:

  • Social impressions climbing.
  • Website sessions are not rising at the same pace.
  • Direct traffic is growing.
  • Branded search increasing.
  • Longer lags between first touch and conversion.

This is driving more “dark attribution,” where social and content influence outcomes that never show up clearly in digital reports.

DISPLAY AND AWARENESS ARE SHAPING AI VISIBILITY

This is the trend that is getting the most attention. A growing number of marketers believe broad brand exposure – Display, YouTube, PR, Social mentions, Community buzz (engagement), is influencing how AI systems surface and talk about brands.

It’s not that AI reads your display ads directly, but that these campaigns generate:

  • More brand searches.
  • More citations and mentions.
  • More reviews and engagement signals.
  • Stronger entity reinforcement across the web.

Because of this, brands are investing beyond traditional SEO, since multi‑channel visibility appears to impact AI‑generated recommendations and citations in a meaningful way and this is a clear indication of influence.

DIRECT TRAFFIC IS BECOMING A CORE KPI

Another consistent theme: direct traffic is becoming a more important performance indicator than overall sessions.

Across agencies, we’re hearing:

  • Organic clicks flattening or declining.
  • Branded impressions rising.
  • Direct sessions are increasing.
  • Conversion quality improving.

The working theory is that people encounter your brand in feeds, AI answers, YouTube, Podcasts, Social platforms or Display, then later type your name or URL directly when they are ready to act. Attribution models that focus on last‑click are under‑valuing that upper‑funnel influence.

FROM CHANNEL OPTIMIZATION TO “ENTITY BUILDING”

Stronger performers are shifting from a channel‑by‑channel mindset to an entity‑building mindset.

Old model
SEO + PPC + Social.

New model
Visibility + Authority + Demand Capture.

In practice, this looks like:

  • Social: create demand.
  • Display: maintain recall.
  • Video: explain and educate.
  • Search: capture intent.
  • Email: retain and nurture.
  • AI: amplify citations and authority.
  • CRM: compound lead value, especially for B2B.

At M3 Digital, we are reallocating dollars to maximize ROA, trimming Paid Search by roughly 20–30% and increasing investment in Social, Display, Video, Content, and Email. We are still seeing positive ROA from Paid Search, but performance has softened relative to these other channels and the way Paid has performed in the past.

METRICS BUSINESSES ARE ADDING INTO THEIR REPORTS IN 2026

Beyond ROAS and sessions, more teams are now tracking:

  • Branded search growth percentage.
  • Direct traffic growth percentage.
  • Returning visitor percentage.
  • Assisted conversion rate.
  • Share of search.
  • AI mentions frequency. “Test, test and retest”
  • YouTube‑assisted conversions.
  • Email subscriber growth.
  • Cross‑channel lift.
  • View‑through leads and revenue.

FOUR SIGNALS OF THE NEW LANDSCAPE

We are repeatedly seeing these four indicators show up together:

  • Higher direct traffic in GA4.
  • Higher branded search in Google Search Console.
  • More “typed URL” sessions.
  • More conversions without a clearly measurable source.

Taken together, these are a strong signal that branding, social, and AI visibility are working in combination.

MOVING FORWARD

The digital landscape is evolving faster than ever, and the businesses that succeed will be those willing to adapt before these shifts become the norm. While the tactics may change, the goal remains the same: building visibility, trust, and meaningful connections with your audience across every stage of the customer journey.

If you’re wondering how these changes could impact your business or where to focus your marketing investment next, the team at M3 Digital is here to help. Contact us to learn how we’re helping businesses adapt to the new digital landscape and build marketing strategies designed for where customer discovery is headed, not where it has been.
